Torrent downloadedÂ .Ink jet printing systems are known in which a print head defines one or more rows of orifices which are arranged relative to the print medium so as to be movable relative thereto in a direction transverse to the rows of orifices. One such system is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,463,359 issued to F. J. Giaccone on Aug. 7, 1984. In such systems, the print medium is caused to move relative to the print head and ink is selectively ejected from the orifices in response to control signals applied to the print head. In such systems, the print media may be supplied from a continuous roll which is rotated past the print head. Alternatively, the print medium may be supplied in a sheet form to a print drum which rotates and moves past the print head. Further, the print head and/or the carriage on which the print head is mounted can be moved relative to the print medium, with the carriage being driven by a servo mechanism which provides a positioning signal based on the error between a desired print location or dot and the actual print location of the print head.
In the ‘359 patent, the print head was mounted on a carriage movable in the x-direction. The paper was fed in the y-direction and the print head was controlled to a home position where a test signal was applied to the print head to determine if ink was present in each orifice, and then a servo controlled the printer drive motors and moved the print head a specific amount in the x-direction relative to the media (along the cross-process direction (x-direction)) so that a dot was printed in a desired position. The servo system was “triggered” by an output signal from a “blister” sensor which was mounted on the top of the print head and sensed when the print head touched the top of the print medium.
