it is a very literate movie. there is lots of classic batman talk. the script is excellent in places, and some of the more subtle dialogues are quite clever, but it is also very talky. its hard to believe that a writer who specializes in the fantasy genre would be able to make a character so credible, but he manages it. this is a role that has been played over and over again in comic books, but its new to the film medium.
the classic batman character, i think, is at his best when he is serious, and when he has to be serious, and hes shown in his final image, in the movie, looking as if hes thinking: ive got this, i can do this. its a bit like dr. manhattan, in watchmen, when he says to the fbi, i can do what you want, but i cant do it if i dont like it. this is the character i like, and the character that is in the comics. the joker, you know, he has a terrible, terrible sense of humor. he is a loudmouth, a jokester, with a terrible sense of humor. the joker, in the comics, in the television shows, in all the movies that ive seen, the joker has no sense of humor. he is a dickhead.
the film is a new origin story for the caped crusader and his alter ego bruce wayne. the film follows bruce as he trains as a crime fighter in a fictional city in gotham, following the death of his parents. when he is thrust into the role of crime-fighting when a billionaire, thomas wayne, seeks to clean up the streets of gotham and can not help the police, he faces a new threat with a growing darkness within himself. and a new ally in the form of a street-smart young man named alfred pennyworth. this film is a modern updating of the batman mythos and with it nolan developed the story in a direction that was different from the comics.
this release includes 10 featurettes – the beginnings, the dark knight returns, comic book heroes, the 1990s, the streets of gotham, the greatest love story of all time, batman begins, the duel, batman: hush and the joker’s favor – led by introductions to five episodes by producer bruce timm, and commentary on 12 episodes by various combinations of the production team: bruce timm, eric radomski, paul dini, kevin altieri, michael reaves, boyd kirkland, shirley walker, glen murakami, dan riba, and james tucker.
