this game is the best in the genre, and it’s probably the best chess program you can buy. some of the older versions of chessmaster did have some bugs, but they have been fixed. if you are a chess beginner, get the 6-cd set to teach you the game, and the 8-cd set to practice. the windows version has a few minor quirks, but i was never frustrated by the user interface. i even recommend the online version, in which i’ve never experienced a problem. the online version is compatible with all sorts of online resources, including yahoo! chess and the chessmaster site.
now for the new additions. the chessmaster series has always had a feature called the chessmaster engine, which is a computer program designed to simulate the game of chess. so the earlier versions of chessmaster just used a computer to play through games to find the optimal strategy. however, even that is now replaced by a new engine named chessmaster 2000. chessmaster 2000 includes several new features, most importantly they have built a database of hundreds of millions of games and are able to study it to try to find the best moves. this is a landmark achievement for the chessmaster series.
the new engine allows the game to be played in different ways. you can play with a computer by choosing from the different strategies that it suggests (very useful if you are a beginner), or you can play human-computer against a new version of chessmaster called chessmaster 2000. i think the best addition is the new kid-friendly mode, which is much easier for kids to play. you can also record your games for future analysis.
this is an excellent game that is well worth the time and the money. it includes many new features that are very useful and would be nice to have in any chess game. however, the online chat support is a great feature. it can be helpful for casual players, but the biggest drawback is that it is not compatible with the newer version. for players who want to play against other humans, this is a big miss. the features are so strong that it is difficult to find anything bad to say about the game. it is the best of both worlds, and is the perfect choice for the player who wants the best of everything.
new features are a welcome addition to any chess game, but it’s a given that they won’t be used by all players. the game is slightly easier to play with more moves available, and the computer is a bit more aggressive, making the tactics feel more interesting.
the learning and training tools inchessmaster 9000are extremely well done. there is a story that’s much like the premise of the movie “the king of kong”, which is based on the game of donkey kong. the story line, which is told by a chess teacher, tells the tale of “just how did this prodigy become so good? he tells us that he was obsessed with chess from a very young age and that he even started playing when he was just 3 years old. the voiceover is done by the pro himself, and it’s a pretty good one. he also tells us that the whole situation was quite out of control, since he was playing for $1,000,000. he says that he was learning chess for the fun of it, but the real reason he was doing it was to give his family and friends something to laugh about. now, that’s for real; not a lot of kids would give a crap about playing a board game to make that much money, but he loved it.
