first, tomb raider was pretty decent. crystal dynamics’ reboot is pretty much a carbon copy of the original, but it looks far better and runs more smoothly. it’s an improvement, not a re-invention. secondly, the fact that a fully-featured remake of a tomb raider game was so enjoyable showed just how much the franchise has been missed. lara croft’s latest outing is a fun, witty and exciting adventure that fans of the original would be foolish not to enjoy. more importantly, it’s that rare game that could have been released yesterday that still manages to look and feel fresh and exciting, 12 years after it first appeared.

as one would expect, a new tomb raider game has some new features over the original. the first is a new control scheme, which is intended to make the game feel like an old-school tomb raider game again. you can still pull off jumps and evasive rolls, but instead of using the analogue stick, you have to use the right and left shoulder buttons to move around. it’s a comfortable control scheme, and it makes the game easier to play and more accessible.
