If one or more of these seals fails, damage to the head can be both thermal and mechanical, from the piston striking the gasket, rocker arms and camshaft being knocked over, or even simple overheating. This can be a contributing factor in the block casting cracking through the head, especially if there is damage to the valvetrain. For this reason, it is recommended not to run the engine when the engine is hot.
Cracked cylinder liners are not the death knell for a well-built engine, but they can lead to some very real problems.
